10 golden feeding tips
10 golden tips to get the most out of feeding Techni-Cal to dogs and cats
- Since Techni-Cal is complete & balanced there is no need to feed anything else or to provide supplements like vitamins, minerals, etc. (unless it is prescribed by your veterinarian).
In fact supplementary feeding is contra-indicated, since any addition to Techni-Cal (including table scraps) will unbalance the carefully formulated diets.
For your dog supplementation could be detrimental, especially during the growth stage. - For dogs we recommend a portion controlled feeding method and to split it over 2 meals a day. We do not recommend feeding ad libitum.
- For cats we recommend to have their daily ration split over many meals a day, as this contributes to maintain a proper urinary pH, which helps avoid the development of bladder stones (struvite).
- The feeding recommendations on package and in the brochures are guidelines only. Each dog and cat is an individual and should be fed according to body condition in relation with age and activity level. Also external factors like extreme cold and heat or stress may influence the feeding amount your pet needs to maintain its optimal body condition. It is therefore important to adjust the recommended feeding amounts according to weight and body score of your pet.
We cannot stress enough the importance of regularly weighing your pet. A vast majority of dogs and cats are overweight and even obese, which might lead to problems with joints and life threatening ailments like heart failure and diabetes. - Your dog and cat should have access to plenty of fresh, clean drinking water at all times. Cats should be stimulated to drink by placing several drinking bowls throughout the house and in the neighbourhood of your pet’s favourite places. Allowing tap water to “breath” for about 6 hours, prior to serving to the cat, might stimulate your cats’ water intake. Sufficient water intake might help avoid formation of urinary stones like struvite.
- The growth stage, especially for large and giant breed dogs, is a very delicate period. Feeding a super premium food, like Techni-Cal, and following a strict feeding regimen, will contribute to avoid skeletal problems associated with poor mineralisation, overweight and growing too fast. Make sure you understand from the breeder or the veterinarian what the proper growth curve for your dog is. Weigh your dog regularly and make sure he/ she stays at or slightly under the growth curve by adjusting the food intake. Do not supplement! Large and giant breed dogs should receive only moderate exercise during their entire growth period.
- Since dogs and cats in their early growth stage need lots of energy, and since their stomach capacity might be a limiting factor, divide the daily ration over 3 meals a day, progressively changing to 2 meals a day as they reach maturity.
- Obese and overweight animals should receive strictly controlled amounts of a specially designed diet like Techni-Cal Weight Control as a substantial element of a weight reducing program revolving around exercise, food quality and energy intake. Dividing the daily ration into many small portions a day will help your dog or cat loose weight since the digestion after each meal requires energy.
- In order to avoid stomach torsion (typical for large and giant breed dogs) you should feed at least two meals a day and make sure you don’t exercise your dog within 2 hours after the meal.
- We recommend having regular health check-ups by a veterinarian in order to make sure that your dog or cat remains in perfect condition.
