Urinary Health
Many cats suffer from Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). One of the causes (there are many others …) is irritation of the bladder and urethra due to the development of crystals and stones. The vast majority of crystals (struvite) are formed when the urine is not acid enough. A minority of crystals (oxalate) are formed if the urine becomes too acid. Usually cats with this ailment respond well to an adapted diet.
Techni-Cal has carefully developed the Urinary Health diet in order to keep the acidity of the urine within the normal range. The level of acidity of the urine is the most important contributing factor to crystal formation.
Nutritional factors beneficial when fighting FLUTD due to crystal formation:

We recommend that you seak veterinary advice when you see symptoms of FLUTD (straining to urinate, frequent attempts to urinate, blood stained urine, crying). Blockage of the urethra can be life threatening.

IMPORTANT FACTORS IN FIGHTING FLUTD DUE TO CRYSTAL FORMULATION:
- Feed a diet that creates an acid urine (pH 6.0 to 6.5), thus preventing crystallization.
- The diet should be highly digestible (thus made of the best ingredients) to avoid that water remains within the digestive tract rather than being absorbed from the gut towards the body.
- The diet should also contain limited amounts of magnesium, a building block for struvite crystals.
- The diet must contain a limited amount of calcium, a building block for oxalate crystals.
- Divide the daily ration in multiple small meals consumed throughout the day.
- Stimulate water intake by placing several drinking bowls throughout the house. If tap water is used, let it ventilate for about half a day before filling the drinking bowls.
- Control overweight (moderate fat content of the diet) and make sure the cat has enough exercise.
- Provide an adequate number of litter boxes and keep them clean.
