Many cats suffer from Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). One of the causes (there are many others) is irritation of the bladder and urethra due to the development of crystals and stones. The vast majority of crystals (struvite) are formed when the urine is not acid enough. A minority of crystals (oxalate) are formed if the urine becomes too acid.
Usually cats with this ailment respond well to an adapted diet. Techni-Cal has carefully developed the Urinary Health diet in order to keep the acidity of the urine within the normal range and so to help prevent the formation of struvite crystals.
